Saving Lives At Sea Catalogue

A brief to produce a catalogue for a fictional exhibition. We were given the copy text unformatted, needing to put it into a hierarchy and order ourselves to create the catalogue.

I created mine with an open spine coptic binding, using black twine to tie the catalogue together as I felt it formed a strong visual and textural link to rope and therefore the subject matter of the catalogue. Inside the catalogue, I used a number of elements to keep continuity across the pages and make the whole thing feel like it linked together. These included an off-centre dark blue line that ran along the top of all pages, blue boxes on pictures that contained quotes and large numbers that linked the contents page and section headers. A recurring use of a simple grid structure and constant typefaces gave a more subtle consistency throughout the catalogue.

All of the photography in the catalogue was taken myself, based on the theme of "man vs. sea". With the imagery, I looked to explore the "wear and tear" that the sea has caused on man made objects through things such as erosion and rust.
