Compendium: Fractals

Compendium: Fractals

A compilation of notes, findings and research materials with regards to the topic of Fractals.

The research was done extensively and narrowed down to the points which were deemed important. Thereafter, the findings were compiled and organised in a methodical manner that made it easy for any reader to be able to understand the research topic, upon reading the compendium.

The aim was to understand how fractals were derived, what fractals were and its applications. Thereafter it was important to derive learning points from the topic, and to voice my own insights with regards to the research topic and how they could possibly be applied to graphic design.
Content
The compendium covers 5 chapters - Chaos, Fractals, Applications, Learning Points and Conclusion. A systematic, step-by-step approach to allow anyone to fully understand the topic of fractals was utilised.

Chaos covers the history of fractals, how it was discovered. Fractals covers the definition of fractals, their types and characteristics. Applications covers the uses of fractals in design, specifically in the fields of Visuals and Architecture. Learning Points covers the value of utilising fractals in design. Conclusion summarises the points learned throughout the research process.

Throughout the compendium, additional notes and insights which may have surfaced during the process are added in, adjacent to the particular paragraph to which the insight refers to, or is derived from. This is to ensure that the reader's flow of thought is uninterrupted during the process of reading.
Design and Art Direction
Fractals deal with patterns. These patterns can appear haphazard, convoluted and even confusing to the eye. These patterns are the main highlight of the topic. The images were stripped of colour to allow the reader to examine each individual pattern without being distracted by colours.

The layout is clean, with plenty of white space. A single column that could host both the main body of text or images, and another narrower column for insights and additional notes. A single column of sizeable width would keep the reader's attention better than multiple columns. Insights and additional notes were the only things which contained colour, a splash of blue to capture the reader's attention and bring focus to the importance of what was being said.

The number of words, font size and colour of the text were all taken into consideration to make the print as comfortable to the reader as possible. A rhythm was determined for the compendium. Bodies of text were interspersed by pages of carefully selected images and quotes to break the monotony of reading.
