In Vienna, Judentplatz Holocaust Memorial
According to the oficial website of Vienna city council “Judenplatz is considered a singular place of remembrance; it combines three things: the Holocaust Memorial, the excavations of a medieval synagogue and a museum about medieval Jewry; together they form a unique unit of remembrance.”
The solemn Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial designed by British artist Rachel Whiteread consists of a reinforced concrete cube resembling a library with its volumes turned inside out.
When this monument was inaugurated in 2000 The Austrian president, Thomas Klestil, called Ms Whiteread's "nameless library" an attempt to "describe the indescribable".
On the other hand Mayor of Vienna, Michael Haupl, said it was "necessary for Austria", and was meant to "send a message to the world", from a country which for years has painted itself as a victim of Hitler, rather than a perpetrator of nazi crimes.
