The Four Temperaments • Character Design

This project is inspired by and explores the psychology of Hippocrates' theory of The Four Temperaments, which suggests that there are four fundamental personality types: Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic and Melancholic. It is designed to help audiences identify their personality type and to playfully visualise what their type of personality might look like, through character design. The project also delves into storytelling and illustration, with each illustrated character being based on one of the four personality types. To help convey the correct personality for each character, I researched elements of emotion, shape, colour and expression but also certain personality traits such as
habits, skills, strengths and weaknesses.
The colour of each character reflects their personality and each character's name is an abbreviation of the four temperament types; CholeRIC, SANguine, PHLEGmatic and MELANcholic. A character dialogue strip has been created in an alternative form to a comic strip, so that audiences are able to catch a glimpse of the characters in action and get an insight into the first of a series of storytelling. The characters can be targeted at a range of different age groups, with the first dialogue strip focusing on bullying. This type of issue would be most related to young kids in school, with the dialogue strip and characters being used in a potential campaign to stop bullying.
The flowchart banner was created for my honours year degree show, which showcased the work from the Communication Design course, as well as the other art courses, at Gray's School of Art (2017). The aim for the flowchart was to have audiences interact with my project, by answering certain questions and identifying which temperament they relate to. A description of each character was available for people to find out whether their given personality was accurate or not. The exhibited piece proved to be very successful with numerous groups of people surrounding the flowchart and expressing how fun and accurate the project was. It was great to
see people interacting with my work and the feedback I received was amazing.
