In hindsight · a photobook story
It is said that human beings are not capable of storing memories till the age of 6. The autobiographical memory is very fragile. Children do generate memories but these tend to fade over the course of time. The children’s brains have not fully developed. Yet, if these memories relate to the emotions they have a chance to linger for an extended period of time, which is not the case with the memories that have no connection to any semiology or sign.
The childhood memories do not only register de pass of time, it also shows the importance of being alive. They are indicators of the relationships between parent’s family members or other familiars. They are not just entries of the passing of time but the vision quest that complement our emotional environment with each passing day. This is the reason why we forget our childhood memories unless they are strongly linked to an object, in this case, photographs.
A birthday picture at the infant stages of our lives are signs loaded with cultural codes inseparable of its symbolic references. It has no artistic end, just documentation for iconic purposes that stores in the memory of the person in question. They are signs filled with feelings and the symbolic explanation that the picture acquires for someone.
This project represents a series of images, which are the visual registration of childhood memories of an individual. Leaving behind the faithful representation of reality and focusing on the backside of the photographs, which show the marks of the passing of time. In combination with different writings, these pictures create strong a verbally- iconic relationship. The photographs belong to a family album, which embarks a timeline between 1988 till 1999. These pictures were torn from the same album as the result of moving out to a new location in search of oneself. These images take part of the autobiography and construction of an own reality.
