ouma
independent magazine concept

the beginning
With a breezy brief of creating a brand new independent magazine, this was a project I relished from start to finish.
Being a keen craftsperson, the logical direction for me was a magazine devoted to textile arts – an area of craft that often feels neglected due to its slightly grandmotherly connotations. Embracing that with the name 'ouma' (affectionate term for Granny in Afrikaans), the publication started taking shape.

the approach
There was no need for busy colours or flashy typography here. Instead, to allow plenty of breathing room for quality photography of complex pattern-work, a clean and minimal layout with a strict grid was created. The focus is very much on the articles themselves, with generous opening spreads to showcase the best of the images in each.
