Behind the design

As the public relations and marketing coordinator at Farr Yacht Design, I was responsible for designing and implementing a new website. This design better reflects the company and its values compared to the previous website. The goal was to create a simple, modern layout with strong visuals.

About the company

Farr Yacht Design is one of the world's leading yacht design companies, boasting an impressive set of race results over its 35+ year history. Farr-designed yachts have won the world's most prestigious grand prix events — from the Volvo Ocean Race to the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race and the Vendée Globe. Farr-designed yachts have also gained the respect of the sailing industry, winning multiple Sailing World Boat of the Year awards, a World Superyacht Award and Compasso d'Oro.

FYD's massive design portfolio ranges from round the world racers to luxurious superyachts, high performance powerboats, racing paddle boards, and small dinghies.
Design choices

Typefaces were selected based on their use in other company promotional material. This helps to re-enforce common elements found across multiple formats, building a strong and cohesive brand image.

The color scheme used Farr Yacht Design's logo as the main color for headings, as well as the footer. Colors were limited to black and grey to keep the overall feel simple and modern. Several site elements (navigation buttons, footer, header) are similar to other products offered by Farr Yacht Design. The Farr 280 website (a 28ft. grand prix racing yacht) uses these similar elements, creating a more unified identity for the brand.

Individual yacht designs were given either a custom header or a generic header, depending whether quality high-res photos were available. The page also adapted to the content available about the design. For some older designs, this meant just the specifications & a promotional sailplan drawing. For other designs that were newer, the page incorporated more full-width graphics, with broken up sections (for example: sails & rigging, hull construction, etc.) for a more brochure-like reading experience.
