Over the course of two devastating wizarding wars, and the deadly reign of Lord Voldemort, two secret societies rose from the wreckage to defend the wizarding world: the Order of the Phoenix, and a small group of Hogwarts students called Dumbledore’s Army. To commemorate them, here’s a guide to some of the top witches and wizards who took on Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Raise your wands in honour.
Order of the Phoenix (First Wizarding War)
For both wizarding wars, there was always an Order of the Phoenix. When Voldemort first came to power, long before the days of Harry Potter, Dumbledore put together a team of talented wizards and witches – including several skilled Aurors - to fight back.
Order of the Phoenix (Second Wizarding War)
Voldemort ascended to power once more in Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts, and had soon returned to his old ways of recruiting Death Eaters and terrifying Muggles. Dumbledore reignited the Order of the Phoenix, this time including the likes of Arthur and Molly Weasley, to once again take on the darkness consuming the wizarding world. Special mention to Mrs Figg for the outside help she offered the Order. And her cats.
Dumbledore’s Army
While Dumbledore was putting together his official army, little did he know that in the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron and Hermione were forming their own resistance. Dumbledore’s Army, a name coined by Ginny Weasley, started out as a secret rebellion against Dolores Umbridge, but ended up being a crucial component of the Battle of Hogwarts.
