Betty was developed by Andia Abernethy and Trak Gray for a Colab Studio brief titled Digital Skins, which asked participants to develop a piece of technologically activated wearable art, conceptually informed by posthuman theory.
As a wearable, performance costume, Betty has hand mounted cameras that feed to a VR headset mounted inside her hair. With training, the performer is able to literally see the world through Betty's eyes.
Conceptually, Betty is a reimagination of the Pale Man from Guillermo del Toro’s film Pan's Labyrinth (2006). Betty is a greedy girl who lures in men with her big lips, high art flare... and her big fat butt! She's born from trickster mythologies: instead of tempting her bait with delicious food, she has shape-shifted into a priceless cubist artwork. Her hunger is for men and money. Don't get too close or she'll gobble you up.
