Emigre magazine (1984–2005) was a provocative fusion of self-initiated publishing, critical writing and experimental typography. This exhibition investigates a key period in the development of graphic design as a mode of authorship and shows how Emigre’s typefaces and page designs embodied new thinking about the designer’s role in communication. The exhibition, co-curated by Francisca Monteiro and Rick Poynor, draws from the Special Collections held at the University of Reading and the collection of Poynor, a professor in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication.
