Memorable Trip to China : Dennis Roeder
Dennis Roeder: The Memorable Trip to China

Ever since Dennis Roeder was young, he has had the travel bug. Perhaps it’s because his parents took him on trips every year around Asia and Australia. He is an elementary math teacher in New South Wales, Australia, where he is hoping to establish a solid career as a teacher. As part of his teaching preparation, he travelled to Europe and Asia to interact with other faculty and learn different cultures.

On one particular trip to China, Roeder was able to make side trips to Laos, Hong Kong, Taiwan. He’s even had an opportunity to see Sri Lanka and see Buddhist monks, an experience that he cherishes to this. It was an exciting experience, even though the physical aspect was quite tough.

While in China, he also got to work with some students preparing for a debate competition. He volunteered to help the students learn the topics and rehearse their speeches. He even got to accompany them to the contest. One thing he appreciated about the culture there is that teachers are revered by students. Some of the retired teachers in Roeder’s group were held in high regard, something he found surprising. It motivated him to know that teachers’ ideas in this part of the world are highly valued.
Roeder likes to travel because it helps him become adaptable to his environment. He is less likely to worry about things he can’t control. Travel has opened his mind to new ways of looking at issues.
