Postcolonial Fiction - Book covers

When asked to redesign the covers of this series of postcolonial fiction books, I began by drawing out one symbolic motif from each story. Rich in metaphors, the half-sun lightbulb, locust and Anthurium flower all represent negative themes such as invasion, destruction and war as a result of colonial influence and white settlement.

Each of these motifs has been lino-cut printed, referencing traditional forms of African and Indian printmaking, which relate to this particular series. The motifs wrap around to the back cover, linking the front to the typeset blurb. The title is set in Gill Sans, however were also lino cut to add to the primitive feel. The bright colour palette contrasts with the bold black outlines tying the three covers together as a series.
