Washington Wizards/Ben's Chili Bowl
D.C. MAKE SOME NOISE!!!
Monumental Sports & Entertainment and I teamed up to create a (temporary) mural featuring John Wall and Bradley Beal to show support and appreciation for the Washington Wizards. The mural was applied to the outside wall of Ben's Chili Bowl, a world renown Washington, D.C., landmark.
After surveying the location and discussing possible visual solutions, I received the brief with assets and was given a timeline totaling 10 days to whip up the portraits and complete the final design. Wait! Ten days??? No problem. Adobe Illustrator Draw (vector drawing application) for the iPad Pro to the rescue!
Adobe Illustrator Draw
Each player was drafted individually as a separate asset to allow maximum flexibility when composing the final composition. Acute detail was given to each player's likeness (face) and body art. I followed my normal process and included 2-3 shading/shadow layers with 2 layers of highlights with the chiseled marker tool to give a painterly effect (see screenshots.)
Here's the basic composition created in Adobe Comp CC:
The portraits were export to Ai via the share menu for color corrections and to add gradients. Next, the separate assets and files were passed to the design team at Monumental Sports & Entertainment for the final composition.Since the mural was temporary, we enlisted Arena Graphics to print and install hi gloss, seamless, vinyl panels which gave the appearance of durable exterior paint.
Arena Graphics installed the final graphic using a heat vinyl application. The mural was unveiled Thursday April 13, 2017, and was displayed for approximately a month. The project was a success and yielded attention beyond our expectation.
"I wish the mural could be here permanently." --Kamal Ali, owner/operator
