Concept
Nature is something that the most of us treasure, I definitely do. For this series I focused on forests especially trees and what the provide us with, like for example one large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for up to four people and they also remove pollution from the atmosphere, improving air quality and human health.
With that in mind, I wanted to combine the shapes, colors, and textures that the forests have given us with a face or parts of someone’s face. I've merged the different images in a way that they compliment each other and also to symbolize that we humans need to be surrounded by nature to survive.
My Process
I went to three different forests in The Netherlands because I wanted different trees, colours and textures to work with. I've been to ''Het Kralingse Bos'' (Rotterdam), ''Het Speulderbos'' (Garderen) and to a little forest near my home in Rozenburg. The pictures of the forests were shot in two different seasons. One of the forests did I visit in the winter when there was snow everywhere and the other two did I visit when it was autumn. I have photographed the portraits in two separate days.
The pictures have been edited in Adobe Photoshop CC and I'll explain to you how I've done it. The first thing I do is adjusting the sliders a bit where it's needed on my raw files in Photoshop. Then I start retouching the skin with the retouching technique Frequency Separation and I enhance facial features like the eyes or the lighter & darker areas of the face with Dodge & Burn. When that's done I also add some adjustment layers like Curves, Selective Color and Solid Color to give the image a different look. After the portraits are finished I merge them with one of the many forest images I've taken. I added a new layer with the forest image on top of the portrait layer and I set the blending mode of the forest image to Lighten. I used Lighten because if the pixels of the selected layer are lighter than the ones on the layers below, they are kept in the image. That's how I've edited the pictures for my project A Touch Of Nature
