Inspiration and Planning
During this week's tutorial I joined a group and we all brainstormed and as a group we decided to go with album cover designs for the theme of the magazine. Once this was established I got some inspiration from two different magazine spreads that I thought looked clean and simple. Minimalistic design seemed to be the best option for the magazine style so we chose that.
As we are doing album cover design, it would only be suitable to make the magazine square to match the shape of Vinyl/CD covers. The size of the magazine was decided next. The width of an A3 is 297mm which would be too big for a magazine so the magazine would be the width of an A4 which is 210mm and the printers would cut the magazine to be 210mm x 210mm.
Grid & Typefaces
This week was the finalisation of the typefaces and the grids. For the headings, Abril Fatface was the best option because it had more of an impact on the page than a sans serif font. The size of the typeface depended on the page layout. Merriweather Bold, 16pt with 18pt leading is used for pull quotes and to make them pop further we decided to make it red. variations of Raleway were also used for the paragraph, Raleway Light, 9pt with 11pt leading and for subheadings, Raleway Bold, 9pt with 10pt leading.
The grid we started with was a 3x3 grid with 3mm gutters but than it would give more variation to the page if we used a 6x6 grid with wider, 5mm gutters. I experimented with different amount of columns and the 3 was the highest amount because the paragraphs would be too narrow if there were 6 columns.
Playing around
After establishing some of my pages before this tutorial, there seemed to be a lot of white space across the spreads that I made. Also, all the pages look that same because I kept all the content within the margins. So I started breaking the barriers to give my spreads more variety and flair.
Image Choice and White space fillers
Before this week's tutorial, I experimented with different shapes to fill the white space and after feedback with my team, we decided that circles best fit the theme for album cover design because they are the same shape as CD disks or vinyl records. After the tutorial, I went off and finished my spreads.
Final Touches & Printing
During the week, I added small touches to my spreads like page numbers and small information in the top corners of some of the pages. Also, I compiled all the other team members spreads to match our flat plan and tweaked their pages by aligning all the page numbers the same and typeface colours and sizes so that they're all consistent.
Presentation and Documentation
Before the presentation, my group members and I collaborated with the reference list. We chose to make a new A3 poster to look like a festival line-up because it would fit the theme and also, if we put the reference list into the magazine, it would ruin the whole theme and magazine. The presentation slide were designed to match the magazine and the design document will be the same, for consistency.
After the presentation, we all collectively contributed to the design document and I worked on my own reflection for my spreads and package the InDesign document for the final upload.
