Motorola Baby Monitor (User Experience Re-design)

Motorola Baby Monitor.

This was a User Experience project that my two team members and I worked on, collaborating with the Artefact design firm in Seattle. We were given a random object and were tasked to transform its poor user experience into something exceptional. Through research, we found that users were most frustrated with the product's interface and that its quality did not match the price they paid. We solved this by focusing on two things - to deliver understanding along with information and to create a more modern experience for users. We added a data-tracking feature to our baby monitor that makes it easy to see deviations from the baby's normal activity, and this sets the baby monitor apart from its competitionThe process is explained in more detail below.

We learned that although our baby monitor was ranked #6 on Amazon's best-selling baby monitors, the reviews did not reflect the success that it was seeing. When we looked at reviews to figure out why, we found out that a lot of the users had similar complaints.
We decided to test the product ourselves to confirm or debunk what the reviews were saying. We experienced a lot of the same problems - un-intuitive buttons and confusing setup and interface.
Next, we interviewed some parents - some new, some more experienced - and asked them what they valued most in a baby monitor.
This was one of the first concepts we came up with. We tested this paper prototype and found that some features were still a bit un-intuitive for users. We then decided to expand our concepts and explored aspects such as orientation of the baby monitor and having an interface with no buttons and only touch screen.
We then concluded by going with the all touch-screen, to provide a more modern experience, and made it a horizontal baby monitor interface to allow users to see their baby on a bigger screen. These were our initial higher-fidelity concepts.
