Tokyo is the place I called home for over 8 years.  I lived in an area called Sakuragaoka.  It was a quiet street and I had a nice garden patio where I would grow plants and BBQ when the weather was good.  But it was less than 5 minutes walk from the craziness of Shibuya Station.  I loved walking around my hood and never left the house without a pocket camera.  These are personal pictures of the things that just visually rocked my world.  I used a diptych to create a cultural commentary.  The juxtaposition of the two images are like visual essays on my life in Tokyo.
I loved going to Sugamo.  My Japanese friends made fun of me because it was the Harajuku for grannies, but I loved the little shops and seeing all the "silver generation" hanging out with their friends.  This was taken for something we shot for NIKE ID and it totally inspired me to make a personal project called書店外里帰り or "Back to the Streets"
My favorite photo taken while living in Tokyo.  Godzilla Mechagodzilla in black tie on the red carpet.  Doesn't get better than that.  I was freaking out with all the other paparazzi but no one cared only the lone gaijin that didn't look like a gaijin.
I love KENDO, the top image is of a 8th dan sensei and how he bows half way but the student bows with their head to the ground.

The Referees at the All Japan Kendo Championships at the Budokan.  (yes more famous for rock concerts these days but they still practice "Budo" martial arts there too!)
Seeing high ranking police officials walking around in their socks always made me smile for some reason.
If you have never gone to karaoke with Japanese people I strongly suggest going.  I kept telling my friends in NYC that these conservative looking girls get crazy and guys take their clothes off and sometimes even light their pubic hair on fire (called bush fire) and no one believed me.  So I had to get a photo of it and show them.
