Installation: Bamboo, Steel, LED light
Size Variable

Bamboo is one of the most common natural building materials used in Asia, especially China and Japan. It is not only found in man-made spaces themselves, but also is used in the scaffolding erected to create modern architecture. Bamboo’s naturally strong properties have allowed it to become one of the few natural materials to have a heavy influence on man-made form.

Inspired by bamboo’s unique relationship with nature and man-made spaces, the installation wishes to explore this natural form’s different identities in our lives. While we, the viewers, have a controlled understanding of the materials used, 55 pieces of 9-meter long bamboo poles, we don’t have control over their form, and their effect on light within the installation. Bamboo may represent nature, growth, sustainability, and emanates a sense of tranquillity; yet at the same time it is symbolic of the structures created by human that are artificial, static and contributive to the overwhelming sense of complexity and fullness of the urban landscape.
Constructed and built collaboratively with the General Services team.
