Current Works-in-Progress: 7 Sports Logos and a Lettering Project
Project: 7 Sports Logos
Sports logos are complicated. Nothing is more emotionally bonded than a fan and a team. But as a driven designer, I want nothing more than to see a beautiful mark on a helmet, basketball uniform, or cross country tank top. Furthermore, with an increasing emphasis put on avoiding brain trauma, I believe it's irresponsible to use sports branding as a way to push out deliberately intimidating logos.
As a result, I am in the midst of a self-directed project in which I'm redesigning every mascot and logo for all seven schools in the La Crosse Catholic Diocese. There are Blugolds, Ramblers, Dons, Royals, Macks, and a couple of teams that go by Cardinals. I am a proud graduate of Columbus Catholic in Marshfield (go Dons!), and for me, this is a great way to give back in a way that makes a huge impact. Nobody asked me to do this, I have no delusions that every school will sign off on it. When I'm finished, it is theirs to use and in the pricing structure of Full Price or Free, it will be free.
Here are a couple of process sketches as I'm working through my concepts.
Project: Hand Lettering
In my freelance life, I want to always leave an emotional impact. That is, I want the effect of my work to leave an audience emotionally affected. The effect is to affect. Therefore, I want my design work to be Affective. Get it? Too punny? Too Dad humor? Deal with it, friend!
