C3 - Community Animal Hospital
Bacon Group, Inc.
Design Challenge: In the early morning hours of April 7, 2007,fire ripped through the Jacksonville Humane Society’s facilities. Firefightersrescued 80 pets, but 86 animals perished. This tragedy prompted theorganization to make a commitment to replace their aging facilities, rebrand toincrease public awareness, and expand available services. The design challengerequired a master plan to satisfy their objectives to rebrand, to establishrules for future development, and to set fundraising goals.

Rationale: Operational needs and available fundingdictated the need for a phased campus approach. Phase 1 included this communityanimal hospital, a new campus entrance and upgraded infrastructure. This phaseallowed for visual rebranding through architectural style and graphics, expansion of public services to provide low cost spay/neuter surgeries, and theaugmentation of the existing animal medical facilities.

Solutions: The hospital program required an efficientconcept allowing sequential movements from function to function including petowners entering the facility, escorting them to examination rooms, andtransitioning animals to the treatment areas. The lobby is considered the hubwith strong connections to the exterior via glass walls that expand theinterior spaces into the landscape around the entry mass. Spaces are positionedto control client circulation from public spaces to examination and then staff circulationfrom exam to holding, treatment, surgery, and recovery with peripheralconnections to support space.

Natural lighting is used to reduce energy consumption andpromote animal health and human comfort. Wood details and textures aestheticallyanchor the building to the wooded site. Wood screens are used to control lightand view. Resinous flooring, porcelain tile, laminated panels, anti-microbialquartz countertops, and stainless steel equipment provide highly durable andeasily cleaned finishes.

Result: The design provides a modern image inarchitecture and animal hospital function with subtle visual branding elementsthat can be expanded in future structures. The Community Animal Hospital is nowa cornerstone of the greater Jacksonville community’s efforts to reduce petoverpopulation and tackle the homeless pet crisis.
