Writing As A Designer – Manifesto

Writing As A Designer – Manifesto
I always have problems to start writing. Maybe because I am a designer and no writer. Undertaking the course "Contexts Of Visual Communication" at the University of Technology Sydney a manifesto was developed.

01 /  Process
Plan – If the process is thought-out, the outcome will be successful, too / Set a schedule, timeline it, start with mind mapping or brainstorming, set yourself a deadline and find your workflow
Edit – Cut yourself short consider your words carefully Change the sentence structures if necessary Check for comprehensibility / Get feedback from others Don’t repeat words, use synonyms instead Are you getting the point? No? Go back to the planning phase
Practice – Inspire yourself Read, read, read / Why don’t you start a blog? Writing is a learnable process

02 / Tips
Professionality – Write formal and keep a distance / Use jargon for different fields / Check syntax, orthography and punctuation
Honesty – Writing is individual – be yourself / Develop an own writing style / Keep it natural, not try too hard If it doesn’t flow, take a break and walk away
Innovation – As creative, express yourself in a creative way / Break the rules / Make something eye-catching / Make something different
Aesthetics – We are designers, make it good looking / Chose the fitting medium / Use a layout which suits the content / Content and design should go hand in hand

03 / Reasons
Working – Mails, briefs, presentations are part of your work / The ability to express your thoughts in words makes it easier to communicate the idea to the customer
Employment – Write a blog about actual topics on graphic design to share your knowledge and to position yourself in a field of graphic design / Write about your understanding of graphic design on your portfolio – you sell yourself with what you write
Understanding – Writing is shifting oneself completely into the thoughts of another – writing develops your empathy / Being practiced in writing which means translating visual concepts into written language helps you to present your thinking to other people
