Diamond Runner
Future of athletic footwear beyond foam based midsole in running shoes. The impact of additive manufacturing on performance and production.
Inspired by the technological advancement in airless tires, impact absorption and giving support to the vehicle draws parallel to that of the function of the midsole. This project stems from the idea of experimentation and testing to develop problem solving design.
The different shapes and patterns inspired from airless tires are 3D printed for structural testing to determine which pattern has the best performance characteristic.
Prototype
Addressing the midsole as the fundamental part of functionality and performance. Based on the diamond pattern, it has been experiment and performed best in its ability to provide support and cushioning. The flexibility of the pattern allows for individualization, tailoring to each individual athlete. The pattern on the sole can be customized by increasing the size of the diamond for cushioning and reducing to increase support. The intensity of the pattern can varied and applied to special areas with high impact to addresses the different needs of each athlete.
