The New York Rangers hockey franchise dates back to the 1926-1927 National Hockey League (NHL) season. The team won a Stanley Cup championship in 1928 and added two more titles, as well as three additional Stanley Cup Finals appearances, over the following 12 years. However, between 1940 and 1993, the Rangers managed only three finals appearances, trips that yielded zero championships.

New York reversed their fortunes following a disappointing 34-39 1992-1993 campaign. Drawing on the scoring and passing capabilities of Sergei Zubov and Mark Messier, who generated a combined 173 points during the regular season, the Rangers improved their win total to 52 games. The Rangers continued their strong play in the post season, dropping just one game over the course of the first two rounds against the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals, including three shutouts and a combined scoring margin of 42-15.

In the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Rangers faced much stiffer competition from the New Jersey Devils. The seven-game series featured six overtime periods and three games decided by a single goal. Game 7 held true to form, with the Rangers defeating the Devils 2-1 in a double overtime victory.

Contesting the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Final in 15 years, the Rangers initially fell behind 1-0 to the Vancouver Canucks, losing 3-2 in overtime on home ice. New York responded by winning three consecutive games by a scoring margin of 12-4. With an opportunity to win the series on home ice, New York fell 6-3 in Game 5 and 4-1 in Game 6, finding themselves once again in a decisive Game 7. The Rangers finally made use of home ice, winning the game 3-2 and delivering the fan base a fourth Stanley Cup trophy.
