A class assignment while at the California College of the Arts; to advertise a local business through a poster inspired by the work of other eminent
graphic designers.
Assigned at random, it was in my good fortune to be assigned to Saul Bass, who I was unaware of though I had seen his work. I was overwhelmed by the breath and scope of this heavyweight of the graphic design world. I was intimidated and felt that I really needed to do a good job to really pull of an worthy 'imitation' of his work.
I really enjoyed working on this project and getting to understand his aesthetic, going through many iterations before I settled on the final.
I was guided through this project with the help of the acclaimed Dennis Crowe from VehicleSF.
As I mentioned, I went through many sets of iterations, you could call them sketches even. Be prepared to enjoy, or be bored. But there are quite a few gems in here that I personally really like, which were slowly weeded out in the
selection process. These come after about a week after we have been briefed about the assignment.
Iteration Set No 2 comes two days after our previous critique. I feel it is a lot more entertaining. I revamped the illustration of the scuba diver and added more of Saul Bass's touches such as working with the borders or adding textures. The homage to Saul Bass in the form of a smaller graphic illustration at the bottom still remains, though sometimes I use a different image than the one in the main illustration. I'm still mostly tweaking and fiddling with composition and text placement of already established elements.
I've had the entire weekend to mull over my feed back from the last two critiques.
I feel i have a good hang of Saul Bass by now, and I am just churning out experiments now.
It was a close choice between the following iterations as the final finished piece.
It was mostly down to a class vote during the last in class critique before the final presentation.
