Projet réalisé dans le cadre de l'atelier L'Affiche animée donné par Nicolas Ménard durant Design International 2017. Dans le cadre de cette semaine intensive, nous devions réaliser deux gifs animés, une affiche sérigraphiée et une animation expérimentale. L'atelier se voyait une exploration de trois grands médiums, soient l'affiche, la sérigraphie et l'animation. Le but était d'amener un dialogue entre ces derniers et d'expérimenter avec l'affiche et la sérigraphie animées.

One week intensive workshop

Project done as part of the Animated Poster workshop given by Nicolas Ménard during Design International 2017. As part of this intensive week, we had to create two animated gifs, a screen printed poster and an experimental animation. The workshop served as an exploration of three great mediums : the poster, screen printing and animation. The aim was to bring a dialogue between them and to experiment with the "animated poster" and "animated screen printing".
Nous devions tout d'abord choisir un film, puis créer un gif inspiré de l'univers de celui-ci. J'ai choisi The Lobster, réalisé par Yórgos Lánthimos. Le film dépeint une société dystopique où tout individu célibataire doit trouver un compagnon dans les prochains 45 jours ou être transformé en un animal de leur choix puis amené dans les bois. Mon gif reprend le ton absurde, humoristique et grotesque du film. Il représente la transformation du personnage de Collin Farrell à travers le film.

First we had to choose a movie, then create a gif inspired by it. I chose The Lobster, directed by Yórgos Lánthimos. The film depicts a dystopian society where single people must find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the woods. My gif resumes the absurd, humorous and grotesque tone of the film. It represents the transformation of Collin Farrell's character through the film.
Nous devions ensuite créer une affiche comportant toutes les images de notre animation. L'intégration des images devait être conceptuelle. Nous devions sérigraphier notre affiche.
Mon affiche représente une forêt. Les formes sont répétitives, car la majorité des personnages du film sont habillés de la même façon, et le film en soi est répétitif. Cette répétition fait également référence au camouflage. La transformation du personnage en homard, puis en rocher rappèle les différentes phases du film. Au premier regard, on peut croire que l'affiche représente des familles avec leurs animaux de compagnie, mais le gif nous révèle que ce sont en fait les animaux en qui ils se métamorphosent.

We then had to create a poster with all the frames of our animation. The integration of the images had to be conceptual. We had to screen print our poster.
My poster represents a forest. The forms are repetitive because the majority of the characters in the film are dressed in the same way, and the film itself is repetitive. This repetition also refers to camouflage. The transformation of the character into a lobster and then a rock shows the different phases of the film. At first glance, we may think that the poster represents families with their pets, but the gif reveals that they are actually the animals in which they are metamorphosed.
Nous devions ensuite recréer notre gif de départ avec la sérigraphie. Le rendu final est intéressant, car il comprend des résidus visuels, ce qui amène une richesse supplémentaire à l'animation de départ.

We then had to recreate our gif with our screen printed poster. The final result is interesting, because it includes visual residuals around the frame, which brings a certain richness to the animation.
L'étape finale de l'atelier consistait en une animation expérimentale créée à partir de l'affiche sérigraphiée.
