Evolution of 1 minute sketch into finished illustration

Fashion Illustration Has to Start Somewhere
Vague visual notes can be seeds for beautiful finished work.

At a recent fashion show in Seattle, Washington, I had the opportunity to sketch runway models wearing sheath dresses by local designer Entice Fashion. I had only about 1 minute to do a quick sketch, which is seen at left. From these I developed more finished illustrations with more detail and color added.
The final works reflect an array of drawing and painting skills, studio experience, careful attention to detail and judicious use of photographs in the absence of the actual models and dresses.
In this case, the model agreed to pose for a longer period of time. This allowed me to capture and memorize even more visual information of the outfit's detailing, construction and color. The short conversation we had also allowed me to get a sense of her personality, which shows in the final.
