Muslim Women Who Slay

The brief for this project was quite heavily dictated by the Islamic Society at the union and involved a lot of consideration of tone of voice. They chose the copy and even the images, from a selection our design team provided. This put quite a lot of pressure on me to produce a design that represented their opinions accurately.

I took my Q’s from their brief and copy, seeing they wanted assertiveness but not aggression, celebration but not fluffiness. I chose strong assertive typography and balanced this with a slightly more gentle blue background. The frame element came from the idea of focussing on and seeing the positivities of a minority group. From this I used the key image of the campaign, to break free from this frame. The headscarf, a symbol of the Islamic faith breaks the mould of expectation - a visual representation of ideas being challenged and the confines of prejudice being broken. While this could be perceived as quite an 'in your face' message, I have endeavoured to adhere to ISOC’s wishes and communicated it with an air of calm and control.
