Once upon a time, Bombay was known for its textile mills. The industry ran on labourers coming from all over the country to work in Bombay, subsequently influencing the chawl culture of Bombay, both of which are a thing of the past now.

The entire stretch of high priced property from Dadar to Lower Parel stretching up till Worli, now a prime area due to the malls, consulates and offices of MNCs were the mill areas before the 1980’s.

The shut down of the mills was devastating to mill workers and the families who depended on their income.  Mill workers committed suicide, as they did not get their money the mills owed them.  A lot of women had to forcibly prostitute themselves to sustain their children. Many of the people were not rehabilitated; some of them are still fighting for their rights and waiting for their money to be given to them by the government.
