THEATER J 2017-18
Poster Design and Illustration
This is my third year designing and illustrating the posters for Theater J's working season. Theater J is one of the most distinctive, progressive and respected Jewish theaters on the national and international theatre scene.
When the theater originally reached out to me this year, we discussed taking a similar approach to the artwork that we took last year, which included a combination of illustration, royalty free photography, limited color palette, and hand lettering. With this in mind, I worked on sketches that were in that same vein. Because I was working with photography, it felt natural to me to work on sketches that ended up looking like rough finals. After talking to the theater, we decided to take a 100% illustrated approach (win!) and to take a second stab at the sketches that were less developed and more rough (that was a first). You can see the photo-based sketches below the finals in this post. You can also see all of my sketches and a few alternate versions that were ultimately scrapped in favor of the finals below.
