Encaustic Wax and Pigment 2012

Encaustic Art - Wax and Pigment - 2012

Encaustic Painting, also known as hot wax painting it involves using heated high grade filtered beeswax and damar resin to which colour is added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface in this case I use AB Birch Ply. Various tools and special brushes are used to shape the paint before it cools, heated metal tools can also be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface.

The art technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits form Egypt around 100 - 300 AD, as well as in many works of 20th century North American artist, including Jasper Johns, Tony Scherman, and Fernando Leal Audirac. Artist in the Mexican muralism movement, such as Diego Rivera and Jean Charlot sometimes used encaustic painting.

I trust you will enjoy my modern depictions of landscapes, plants and the revealing images of my soul using this ancient art practice.
