The Whitworth Deck Chair was the result of a collaborative project between a group of three-dimensional designers and textile artists, in response to a live brief given by The Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. The brief was to either make something for the gallery shop, the neighbouring Whitworth park or the gallery itself; to which we made something for the shop.
Using CAD, we could draw out and test that the frame in a virtual space, to ensure that it could fold flat, before we printed out the designs to be made by hand. The chair is made from spalted beech, giving it the creamy streaks throughout.
Taking visual inspiration from nature and the architecture of the gallery, the textile artists designed and produced four slings. Two were screen printed by hand and the other two created on photoshop, to be digital printed onto the fabric.
They chose a colour palette to compliment with the existing branding of The Whitworth Gallery, so that the customer felt they taking home a part of the gallery.
