Is she worth it ?

Is she worth it?
by Kristen De Vera and Grace Chen

Problem: The number of adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes increases every year. The American Diabetes Association wants to spread awareness about the link between unhealthy food choices, childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Idea: Many of us find comfort in eating junk food to relieve negative feelings such as stress or grief, but this can lead to unhealthy eating habits. In our campaign, we personify junk food as a crush/relationship that you depend on for happiness but consequently affects your well-being. We want teens to realize how their unhealthy relationship with junk food can lead to diabetes.

Solution: A 60-second radio ad, and a poster with graphics and a short story will address the consequences of overeating junk food in hopes to provoke the audience to question if eating junk food is really worth their health.

Snapchat stories will be utilized to reach out to teenagers and a website will also be utilized to help educate teenagers about diabetes.

Radio Script
*school bell rings*

*fades in background sound of young people/students chatting/laughing, etc., getting out of class while narrator talks.

There she is. Aisha Creamia.

Your heart jumps and a smile appears across your face.

She’s as pretty as the first time you saw her while waiting in line for lunch.

You can almost smell the vanilla perfume she wears everyday and feel her cold touch against your skin.

Your friends tell you that you’re a little obsessed, but what do they know?
They don’t understand.

No one’s ever made you feel this way before.

She makes you happy.

But the more time you spend with her, the worse it gets.

She sucks up all your energy.

She’s a freeloader and you end up just hungry and thirsty.

And eventually, you’ll be blind to her true self.

*background noise fades out while the next 2 lines are said

Think about it.

Is she worth it?

*background noise stops and there is silence
*pause for 2-3 seconds

Junk food won’t always make you happy.

Overeating junk food puts teens more at risk of getting diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Every year about 3700 people under 20 are diagnosed.

With the American Diabetes Association, we can help our communities make healthier choices so that together, we can conquer diabetes.

Through Snapchat, teens can discover the story of Aisha Creamia and diabetes.
Our website will further address diabetes by providing more facts and detailed information about the disease.
