My idea with this project was to do a digital photo collage series. Since the theme of my piece is on colorism, I chose to portray one nationality of women and show how skin color can create a divide between people from the same family, country or community. I took photos of Indian women in my life from different backgrounds, ages and of course skin tones. I took a photo of my friend, my mother and my little cousin. I wanted to show common insults or “suggestions” that society had for women no matter what their skin tone through the images and text. I have seen these insults being said to my friends and family members and this racist portrayal is often seen in commercials on Indian television, especially by a company called Fair & Lovely. This obsession with becoming “fairer” is ruining not only Indian women’s self-esteem, but women of color in general, and forcing them to attain Western beauty standards that are impossible to achieve.
