STRING INTERVENTION
Designing Awareness
This was part of an outdoor space design intervention that my group and I worked on together. The site location we chose was on CSULB campus, where a row of trees made a pathway that students rush pass every single day, unaware of their surroundings. The main purpose for our intervention was that we wanted to change the path of the people going through the place. Everyday people pass by that are too busy texting on their iphones or just rushing by to get to class, so we wanted people to stop and look up at their environment for a change. We wanted something appealing to entice them to look up in the first place, so we decide to use simple strings of colorful yarn, and intertwined them around the trees. We designed the pathway of the strings in a way that looked appealing, and abstract. As a result, numerous students stopped in their tracks to observe this space that wasn't there before. We were basically able to design a space inside a space, and it turned out quite beautiful.
