In 2017 Magazines Canada launched the new Grands prix du magazine programme/Canadian Magazine Awards, later to be known as the Magazine Grands Prix. The Magazine Grands Prix celebrates creative and journalistic excellence and deepens the conversation on issues that drive our country forward.

We wanted a design that would encapsulate the essence of Canadian magazine and represent the written word on a page. To visualize this we drew inspiration from Canada's rich landscape and used organic line forms inspired by woodgrain – natures own story. For the inaugural event I used the lines to illustrate individual squares canvases to recognize the editors, art directors, writers, photographers, illustrators, designers, developers and producers who bring the unique craft of storytelling to life. When connected the canvases formed a much larger picture, a symbolic reference to all the components required to make a magazine complete. Arresting typography and an understated black and gold colour palette was used to elevate the programme and set the tone for the inaugural award dinner and fête.
