Very British Types

Commissioned for design concept / ideas and final artwork for this six-fold pamphlet that was given out to accompany a talk by author Mark Overdone about two British Typefaces and their creators - Johnson and Gill.

A large sheet format, folded with a belly band / wrap showing the event details. For the initial unfold, one side of each of the sheet’s outer part demonstrates visually both Johnson and Gill in relation to each other. Unfold it fully and you get a London Underground map, but all stations are replaced by a wide variety of businesses / subjects / organisations / places / musicians who have used Johnson or Gill at some point. I felt this was a perfect and playful idea, considering London Underground design work uses Johnson. It can be used as a poster... and the subject on many a conversation on who we may have missed!

The background images were letterpress letters shot at Leicester Print Workshop, edited for the pamphlet with a strong, intense dotscreen. Another shot was used on the inside of the belly band in reverse.

This was available alongside a goodie bag from Monotype.
