Growing Through the Barbed Wire

Self Portrait Sculpture: Growing Through the Barbed Wire
The copper barbed wire is thin and sharp on the edges. It is bendable and could go in any direction. It is shaped so it forms a human figure. Growing from the heart and out the neck are flowers and they are a subtle shade of white. There are just enough and they are in bloom. As I bent and shaped the wire, I was happy to see it take form, but my fingers were hurt cutting and handling the wire. The barbed wire represents me and the different emotions that ran through my body when I lost my grandpa, the most important man in my life. I was sad, angry, and afraid. As time passed, I learned to take a little step out of that pain and a flower would bloom. I began to talk to people again and find something to smile about. More flowers bloomed. Now, I have the courage to share what I’ve been through and show others that beauty could come even from your greatest loss.
