I created a new edition of Funeral Rites, Jean Genet's brutish tale of war, sex and identity. Genet gives a description of Funeral Rites, calling it a “prismatic decomposition” of love and grief. I used this phrase as a visual cue as I created the front and back covers and flyleaf. Inspired by the erotic drawings of Jean Cocteau, a longtime friend and collaborator of Genet, I chose crude, yet childishly endearing imagery which speaks to the rough and tumble, sexy environs of Funeral Rites.
