Skillman Library Reactivation
This studio project was sponsored by Rock Ventures and the Detroit Public Library. The goal was to reactivate the Skillman Branch of the Detroit Public Library. While keeping some of the existing functions of the space, new functions were proposed as well, such as a cafe and retail space, and community rooms focused on collaboration. Conceptual floorplans developed by my partner and I were selected by the sponsor to be the plan for the space.
Moving forward from conceptual work, my responsibility was the Children's Library. I wanted this space to be appealing for both kids and their families. Through the use of soft, low seating, and work tables, this space can be used for a variety of functions including story time, workshops, and after school groups. I also created different structures that are both functional and interactive. The first is the globe in the center of the space which is a bookshelf, and also a fun place for kids to play in. On one side only adults can walk through, on the other the opening is only big enough for a child to crawl through. The other structure is called the imagination station. This structure would have tactile, interactive materials that could be used as supplemental items to books, inviting children to explore and learn in a different way.
