Artfull Film

Artfull Film is a series of posterzines & cinema screenings that explore the complex, ever-changing relationship between art and film.

Each month, Artfull Film hosts a ticketed event in which art is included, discussed or parodied within the film screened. We also write, design and illustrate a posterzine series (available to buy online and on the night), that accompanies each film event.

'Films that feature' are films which physically use high profile paintings as background decor, a plot device, or to develop characters. Occasionally a film uses a completely unique painting, and in these cases it is the characters that must contexualise the prop for us. These films include The Grand Budapest Hotel and Goodfellas. Unlike unknown paintings by unknown artists, recognisable works of art tend to carry with them their own unique set of associations. Their monetary worth, their culture, or the artist’s message often are transported. These films include Ex Machina, Skyfall and Red Dragon.

'Films as art' are films that are experimental in nature, pushing the boundaries of what should be considered a movie, and what should be considered a piece of art. These films usually follow an ambigious narrative, if no narrative at all, surrealist imagery and a message that is not clear. They are works which encourage viewers to question, rather than passively absorb. These films include Un Chien Andalou, Eraserhead, and A Clockwork Orange.
