Cymatics "Wear What You Hear"

"Wear what you Hear" Wearable sculptures

Human beings have been using sound and music to stimulate the senses and for celebration and ceremony for millions of years. It can be enjoyed and recorded audibly but to convert sounds from being heard to being seen is still a mystery and the phenomenon is still being explored today. Some of the methods of turning these sounds into a visible form is called Cymatics. This is the main inspiration for my work.

Wearing music related items is a fashion that never goes out of style. From the latest headphones to a music print shirt, there are many ways which musical themed images and sound has been made to carry with you were ever you go.

I wanted to create something that was visually pleasing, which could be seen as patterns but have a deeper connection to sounds in their pure form.

The Tonoscope method of Cymatics uses water and light so that the patterns created by sound vibrations on the surface of water can be seen. I have used these cymatic images to create the patterns seen before you.

I have used different patterns in overlapping designs with the cut out areas allowing the observer to see through to the layers beneath. This is similar to the way a piece of music might have a main tune and have harmonies running underneath. This is my take on a visual experience which has the multi-layered effect of music.
