The weather not looking great for Kananaskis or Banff, we decided to go for the long drive down to Crowsnest Pass again to bag Turtle Mountain - the mountain that collapsed during the Frank Slide, the deadliest rockslide in Canada.
The Frank Slide was a rockslide that buried part of the mining town of Frank, Northwest Territories (now Alberta) at 4:10 am on April 29, 1903. Over 82 million tonnes (90 million tons) of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain within 100 seconds, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway line and the coal mine.
Great fun hike, with some fun scrambling if you choose or an easy route is also possible. Ridge is not hard or exposed, especially if dry.
Prairies, mountains, good people and country music - the Alberta experience.
Looking down the spine, towards the town of Frank.
Working through the weird giant cracks on the mountain.
Looking Northeast towards the prairies (Calgary down there somewhere).
Walking down the spine.
Great views on the walk up the mountain.
Negotiating some boulder climbing - purely for fun...
Looking down at the rockslide. Standing on a mountain that fell off is kinda sketchy... All I could think of was the mountain was gonna collapse.
Walking on the ridge towards the summit.
Panorama from the summit, looking South towards the Rockies - so many mountains to be climbed!
