Delacroix Islands, Louisiana
2005
This display shows a section of the Islands five months after one of the most destructive hurricanes to affect the Louisiana Coast, Hurricane Katrina, swept through them. The black areas represent water and the white areas represent land. Although the wetlands had been disappearing for several decades, Hurricane Katrina had a significant negative impact on the Islands and surrounding areas.
Delacroix Islands, Louisiana
2010
This display shows the same section of the Islands five years after Hurricane Katrina swept through them. In the five years following Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana’s Coast continued to be ravaged by several large hurricanes and man-made disasters, including a large oil spill. The black areas represent water and the white areas represent land. You can see a little change in the land as larger areas of water begin to take over.
Delacroix Islands, Louisiana
2016
This display shows the same section of the Islands eleven years after Hurricane Katrina swept through them. The black areas represent water and the white areas represent land. It is evident that the Delacroix Islands are vanishing away with what used to be a large, healthy vegetation area. These are not the only wetlands that are diminishing which is why it is so important to recognize these drastic changes. We need to become aware of what is happening in our world around us and take action to replenish the areas that we have lost.
