Utopian Iraq

Utopian Iraq

We begin our journey in 2020, on the day of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Baghdad. In this report, we present our imaginary vision of a utopian Iraq.

Imagining an Iraq in which the 1958 overthrow never materialised, we thought of a country not only spared from the tumultuous events of 1958, but also the series of failing governments, civil strife, war, and suffering that followed. We envisioned Iraq as the opposite of what it has become today. We imagined a prosperous, technocratic, and multicultural state.

Furthermore, in a region that remains familiar, we delved into the economic, social, and cultural systems at play, as well as the internal and external threats Iraq faces from both state and non-state actors.

This exercise tested the extent of our imagination: How far could we go in constructing a desired reality?
