Feature Stories and More
The architecture of Kiplinger's created a section opener "poster" which served as both the introduction to the section topic but also as the first page of the lead feature in each section. Sometimes the page was used as an introduction to multiple element stories, others it served as the main artwork for the feature.
"Best Cities" is a recurring feature for Kiplinger. This year rather than single images of cities, with running text, we decided to create a more lively layout, with boxes which emphasized affordability and fun.  The key demographic data was also included for each city, giving the reader the full picture for a city's ranking on one page.
Who wouldn't want to save thousands of dollars quickly? Illustrator Kyle Pierce had sent me a promotional email, and this seemed the perfect (and fun) way to include accessible and relatable photographic imagery along with specifics on the ways to save. Dollar savings are highlighted in red, and adding up the total savings on each page helps make the savings possibilities very real and specific for the reader.
The story—how to make a million (and other dreams come true) was a rare opportunity to feature portraits and hire photographers to bring them together visually. The opening page still life photos gave a sneak preview of what readers would find when they turned the page. Simple graphic elements tie together the main story and related sidebar while more "fun" dreams have a more whimsical graphic element. Photography editor Wendy Tiefenbacher helped create a cohesive visual story.
