Designing with Glyphs Composition Project
Abstract Glyph Composition Project, Typography, ART 230
For this Typography project, we were assigned to create two typographic compositions using the assigned specifications and the principles of design. The finished compositions should feel complete and harmonious where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I was assigned to use glyphs from the fonts Neue Haas Grotesk Bold and Stempel  Garamond Roman. We were limited to using only black or white in our compositions, using five to eight distinct glyphs, and using glyphs that contained at least 5 different elements of typographic anatomy. They could include a stem, counter space, spine, bowl, and ascender, descender, loop, arm, and cross bar.
We were challenged to showcase the personality of the font while adhering to the project requirements. The real difficulty of this project, for me, lay in the inherent abstract nature of the project. Generally, typography is meant to communicate, so having to make a composition using type intentionally abstract was not easy!
Like my Shapes Composition project, this project was selected and hung in the Spori as part of the featured work for the Typography class.
Let me know what you think of my project, and be sure to check out my other projects, either on Behance or on my portfolio website!
