A'CHIK : WHERE WOMEN RULE THE ROOST
As Gandhi once said, “it hurts me to think that people in their rush for everything modern, despise all their ancient traditions and ignore them in their lives”. Similarly, Garo Tribe in Meghalaya, India, suffers the impact of mobility and change, resulting in local weavers loosing out on their traditional skills and youngsters drifting towards the western culture, unable to retain the charm of age old traditions.
Entitled A’chik, Garos who call themselves A’chik Mande (hill people), highlights North East India’s, Garo Tribe. Further it aims to emphasise on the forgotten North Eastern Textiles of India, to revive, rediscover and make it mainstream. A means of self-discovery, this is a journey of reconnecting with roots and rediscovering a whole new side of identity.
