Best Bass Fishing Lakes in Alabama

The holder of a juris doctor from the University of Alabama, Edgar Gentle leverages over 35 years of legal experience as an attorney with Gentle Turner Sexton and Harbison, LLC. Outside of the courtroom, Edgar Gentle is an avid bass fisherman who participates in a dozen tournaments annually.

Results from past tournaments as well as research conducted by fisheries biologists can help determine prime fishing destinations. In Alabama, the Bass Angler Information Team (BAIT) compiles a list of lakes with the most and biggest bass.

1. Lake Guntersville: BAIT ranks Guntersville as the top lake in the state in terms of bass average weight and amount of time required to catch one weighing at least five pounds. The shallow, grass-filled lake is known primarily for quality and not quantity.

2. Aliceville Lake: A prime spring lake located on the Tombigbee River, Aliceville ranks first in BAITs' pounds-per-angler-day and bass per-angler day categories. It also ranked second, behind Guntersville, for the average amount of time it takes to catch a bass weighing at least five pounds.

3. Pickwick Lake: Known for its smallmouth bass density, the 43,000-acre lake located on the Tennessee River ranks near the top of BAIT's list of average bass weight and pounds-per-angler-day. While the lake prominently features smallmouth bass during March, it becomes a prime spot for largemouth bass in June.
