Basic Safety for Kids around Ponies

For more than a decade, A maze'n Farmyard has operated as a family amusement center in Eden Valley, Minnesota. The center offers a huge range of attractions to keep its guests entertained, including pony rides. The pony rides at A maze'n Farmyard are designed for young visitors and make for great photo opportunities.

As with any animal, ponies react differently to the people around them. As a result, there are a few tips that parents and children should follow when interacting with ponies.

When horses or ponies become scared, they may kick with their hind legs. For this reason, children should never approach a pony from behind. If this is the only available way to approach the animal, speaking in a soft voice will ensure that the pony is aware that a person is approaching. This keeps the pony from becoming scared. Preferably, kids should approach ponies from the shoulder instead of from behind or head-on.

Throughout the time a child is with a pony, adults must look for signs that the animal is stressed. A pony pinning its ears back is the most recognizable sign of this. If this occurs, the child should slowly back away from the pony.

Following these tips can help ensure that both pony and child have an enjoyable interaction.
