Transitions: The Type Designs of John Baskerville

Transitions: The Type Designs of John Baskerville is a typographic installation made to teach tourists on the Freedom Trail in Boston about John Baskerville and his typefaces. It is is placed outside the Printing Office of Edes and Gill, an attraction on the Freedom Trail that demonstrates a colonial era printing press.

The installation is an interactive plaque on hinges, which contains both a biography of John Baskerville and samples of Caslon and Baskerville type so that the viewer can compare and contrast Old Style and Transitional typefaces. The structure of the installation functions as both a book and a demonstration of the printing press, allowing the viewer to learn the historical facts through reading the text and examine how printing works by handling the installation and seeing how the reversed metal type translates to a correct print.

The 3D mockup of the installation was modeled in Blender.
The informational sheet found inside the installation.
